This song has been selected as one of the Hyakunin Isshu. In the past, education through songs, letters, and pictures was used for children who were too young to have good morals and manners. ​The meaning of the waka poem is that the shackles the wind placed on the river flowing through the mountains were like the autumn leaves that remained without flowing away. ”Shigarami” is a device that dams the flow of a river.
